Tried to switch to vDS and now can't reach host.
First off, using VMware ESX 4.1 Update 1. Where I work we currently use vSS as our primary virtual network. I've been looking at moving us to vDS and started testing with a blade we have available.
- I created a new distributed switch.
- Created a portgroup for each VLAN. I basically mimicked what we had in each vSS.
- Added the blade to my vDS and chose the NIC cards available.
- Added the blade and test VM to the applicable portgroups.
- Applied changes and now I can't reach my blade... at all.
- Is there a 'single mode' I can boot into to get a root shell to make changes to the VMware OS? Like in Red Hat.
- Is there anything I can do to get access to the cli console besides having to reformat and re-install VMware?
- I know you didn't see me configure vDS, but any thoughts on why this happened?
Edit: I think this is obvious but I will point it out anyways. Our vSS are working perfectly fine and VLAN traffic passes with no issue.
Old Dell PowerEdge T410 -- need supported OS (noob alert)
It's generally OK for what I'm doing (file storage, remote access, virtualbox nonsense, etc), but it seems limited in what kind of management software I can install because it's not a supported server OS.
What are my best options for something that offers more compatibility or flexibility? For example, say I wanted to upgrade all the perc 6/i raid disks to larger ones without lots of headaches.
Would something like ESXi allow me to run openmanage and raid configuration stuff AND allow me to plop my windows 10 install down on top of that for daily use? Can I then access ESXi remotely?
Current state of affairs is: Windows 10 as the heavy lifter, and a linux install of ipmi tool to, well, I haven't really used it yet... but only as a last resort for power control. everything else is through whatever hotkey I need at startup. pretty inconvenient when I'm not in my basement.
